Jientje's (sounds like Gene-chu's) doors made me feel like grabbing my camera and hiking around the neighborhood in search of photogenic portals. It was 40 degrees yesterday and it was One Day Without Shoes Day, in which, if you missed it, you will have another chance to participate on April 16th...
When you buy a pair of Tom's shoes, Tom's Shoes donates a pair of shoes to somebody who cannot afford to have a pair of any brand of shoes. That's why the shoes are about 55 bucks a pair, but it's for a worthy cause.
...anyway Fash told me not to wear any shoes and I was too wimpy to hike around taking pictures of doors, in the cold, in my bare feet. But I did think a lot about doors.
I thought about this door that I.T. fashioned with his own hands, painted nicely and set into the place where it would permanently live on hinges if it looked okay. But when we stepped back to make our decision about that, it did a Peter Pan into the sink faucet below giving itself a bullet hole to the chest. Caulk and paint. This door now keeps our toothbrushes safe from hairspray mist.
The 40 degree weather reminded me that it is spring in Michigan, which in turn reminded me that it is almost fishing weekend. That's the weekend when the cat goes away and the mice do play. My sister, Fash and I have a garage sale over fishing weekend. One year, shortly after I sold our house while I.T. was at work, I made a colossal mistake over fishing weekend and sold I.T.'s brand new, $100 weedwacker for $1.00 instead of selling the weedwacker that I.T. had found on the side of the road and fixed for free, which was the one he'd donated to the garage sale with a suggested price of $1.00. This led to a lecture the following year, something about no more surprises when dad gets home from fishing weekend.
I didn't place painting the front door into the surprise catagory. But when the boys returned from fishing weekend that year, I.T.'s truck rolled up in front of our house real slow-like.
I guess it's possible that I.T. may have thought the house had new residents. He may have wondered if Fash and I and he and the boys still lived here. Now that would qualify for the surprise catagory. But no. I just painted the front door. That's it.
Thinking of the colossal garage sale mistake, reminded me of the word colosseum, because I was pondering doors. Remember the poor guy whose fate depended on the king's daughter, whether she would give him the cue to choose door #1, behind which waited the beautiful lady, or door #2 where the tiger waited to devour him? How do you feel about stories that end like that? Which door do you think she chose? (Need a refresher on the story, The Lady or The Tiger? Here's a link.)
All this thinking about doors reminded me of something Jesus said: "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened."
I thought about this promise. If I ask the Lord for direction, if I ask the Lord to help me, if I ask the Lord which door? He'll show me The Way. His perfect way. I do not have to worry that he might give me a cue to open the door with the tiger waiting to devour me, because Jesus always has my very best interest in mind and I'm pretty sure that doesn't include me getting eaten by a tiger out of jealous spite. So this is where I stayed my wandering mind. Well, here and on the Tom's shoes. I'm saving up to buy a pair.

well said. Great looking door.
I like Jientje's name. It's fun to say and so pretty. So is her picture of the red door. Your picture of the yellow door is very nice too. Really it is! And I think you did a great job painting it. You are more than welcome to come paint my door if you want. I'll even make you some gluten-free something that you can eat. :)
I hope Mr IT warmed up to the yellow door.
I'm all for a good cause but I'm a bit lost on this one. How does my going barefoot help people in Ethiopia? I'm wimpier than you are cause I would have to stay inside all day if I couldn't wear shoes. Sadly I don't like to get my feet dirty. I know it's weird. When I was in my teens I was always barefoot and it never bothered me.
I can't believe you sold a $100 weed-wacker for $1.00. That was one HAPPY customer! The up side is that you probably aren't going to get a lot of requests to help with other peoples garage sales. :D
I hope you know I'm just playing with you cause I love you.
The Lady or the Tiger.. I really don't like stories like that. If you're gonna write a story you need to put an ending on it. LOL!
I love the ending on your post! Something I need to hear continually these days. If I ask for direction He will show me The Way and His Way is Perfect.
Sorry about writing a post in your comments section. Have a good weekend my friend!!
Great post Heidi!
I like and follow Jientje also...she si a wonderful picture taker!
I really like to follow the phrase at the end...I so hope a door will be opening soon for us!

Heidi,
I loved that you painted your door. I think the color is inviting and warm and no wonder hubby thought he was in the wrong house. Now does he like it?
Make sure you stop by my blog for a chance to enter in both book giveaways as one ends tomorrow.
Love and Hugs ~ Kat
What a great job you did on your door! I did ours last year. I think it took me 3 days and then I didn't realize about not painting the inner areas...thus it sticks quite often...but won't too much longer as each time it sticks a little bit of the paint comes off...sigh.
I can't help but laugh at the weedwacker story..Although not funny at the time I am sure. It is SO something I would have done. And don't you just LOVE those lectures!
As for choosing Door #1 or Door #2...Well, I would still be standing there. Decisions are NOT one of my high points.
P.S. Glad to see you kept your shoes on. Having cold feet to help a cause is ok but chances of stepping on rusty nails, picking up germs, broken glass and the like...well, I'm just not sure that you ending up in the hospital getting a tetnus shot is the way to help. There needs to be another way to get the word out. (I guess I am a stick-in-the-mud).
Have a great day!
Loved this post, and that yellow door is so pretty! Love the reflection in it!
Love the shoes for shoes thing. One day I will buy a pair of Toms shoes. But I can't imagine going barefoot for the day. I am a tender foot. :-)
My husband just asked me about the "Tom's shoes" and suggested we make that something to check out. I can't imagine not having shoes! Looking at my shoes and thinking of others makes me realize just how spoiled and selfish I really am.
Great door...I am such a sloppy painter!
He is truly in control. I am thankful HE is greater than any obstacle in my life.
Blessings, hugs, and prayers, andrea
Great story!
I enjoyed this post and I remember that short story from 8th grade!
Great post Heidi!
