How Do you Shoot a Firecracker?

On an extreme scorcher of a day, my mom has been known to say, "it's hotter than a firecracker on the 4th of July". I wanted to show you a hot firecracker on the 4th of July. But even though I have a fancy setting on my new Nikon that says 'fireworks display' under the menu of the scene mode, I am telling you right now getting a perfect shot of a firecracker at it's peak of beautiful explosion takes more skill than I've got. I spent the 4th of July watching fireworks through a 2.5 inch LCD screen on the back of my Coolpix S550 and all I have to show for it is this collection right here. Not exactly what I was going for. But green is in.

Looks like something out of a Rocky Horror Picture Show- I've never seen that show, but this is what I imagine might be seen in that show.Looks like Princess Fiona's *poof* just before she turned into an ogre, so she could live happily ever after with Shrek. Only problem is, she didn't *poof*, Fashionista says she made the change over in a spray of sparkles. I don't know. The spray of Fiona's sparkles?A feather duster as seen under a microscope as it dusts electrons.

You get the picture. Literally. These are them.

The moon was enough of a display for me. Didn't have the correct mode on, I don't think, but..

Maybe someone else has some good firecracker shots? Let's see 'em.

I was doing the same thing...and had about as much luck as you did! Somehow, I don't think anyone will use our pics for advertising for the 4th of July. It is hard to guess when to take the shot. You kind of have to anticipate!
By the way--your moon shot turned out. Mine didn't!

You are a better woman than me, I did not even attempt to get the cameras.

Your shots are really good, it is very difficult to get good firework pictures. You should be very happy with the results.

Great pictures

I let my son do the photography so nothing to post here. :) I liked yours though.

My camera has such a delay that I have to anticipate what I think MIGHT happen in order to get good pics. I wouldn't even attempt fireworks. I think your pictures were awesome.

But to be honest, what I especially liked was your comment, "It looks like something from The Rocky Horror Picture Show....I've never seen that show but...." lol.

I've seen most of it in bits and pieces but never in its entirety. Did you know Susan Sarandon (sp?) is one of the stars in it? There's even a scene where she is wearing a bra and no shirt. That is so NOT her. lol. Anyway, very odd movie....wait a minute, this post wasn't about The Rocky Horror Picture Show at all. it was about fireworks....wasn't it?

There I go again. Monkeys Are Funny...

I LOVE your fireworks pictures. I couldn't even come close to these.

Now about the Rocky Horror Picture Show...
confession... I have seen it several times. I know all the words to several songs and would remember most of the words to most of the songs. It was my life BC and I grew up in California. There you have, the skeleton is out of the closet.

those are pretty good fireworks pics! what were you expecting-- something you'd see on a calendar? i don't think so. those are pretty similar to what i get w/fireworks mode on my dslr.

not that i got any this year, since i forgot to bring the camera entirely. nor did the kids take theirs. oh well. at least that way i got to actually enjoy the fireworks rather than viewing them through the camera-- which in my case means thru the tiny little evf, since my cam doesn't have lcd shooting. i sure would have loved to get pics of jubilee & her friend snuggling under their blanket on the grass, though.

I've tried getting those shots too! Frustrating! I love the shop of the moon!
