On the Outside Looking In

I'm on the outside looking in.

I don't know if it's because we have no will -power over television in this family or because we are just so blasted tight fisted with our cash or a combination of the two, but for at least a year now we haven't watched more than a handful of hours worth of t.v. No cable. No Dish. Only 3/4 of a rabbit ear left on the table-topper antenna unit, though we do have tin foil wrapped around the stubs and fanned out into foil elephant ears, with the whole thing placed near the slider door to the backyard- just in case that might gain us an ounce of reception.

What we do have is a box. An HDtv box- I think.

In a perfect world, if this box is turned on, while our television is on, we should be able to watch at least four or five channels of news and stories with high def clarity. But we live in a fallen world with broken boxes and a distorted view of what is going on out there. Or in my case, no view.

Our particular HDtv box is pretty special. Most of the time it delivers no picture whatsoever. I'm so glad I only paid $10 for this thing. But every once in a great while, someone in this family will get the urge to twist some tin foil and turn knobs in hopes of watching a little television. And every once in a great while, the box will do a little dance and kick out a clear picture of something. For example: on the evening of the season premiere of LOST, I merely flipped on the tube and bingo, there it was, clear as day- that amazingly complicated show with more twists and turns than our tin foil rabbit ears. I did watch it and I was LOST. So I guess I got it.

But. Of course when we want to watch something worthwhile, like, say, the Olympics! The box feigns death.

So. I'm livin' a slice of what it feels like to be in the world, but not of it. What on earth am I doing if I'm not watching the Olympics, you ask? Intermittent with sulking and trying to be content, I am sitting by a roaring fire every night reading So Long, Insecurity- You've Been a Bad Friend to Us by Beth Moore, Dug Down Deep by Joshua Harris and Her Mother's Hope (preview copy) by Francine Rivers. I'm finding out that: it's a little hard to bid ado to Insecurity; what I believe about the One who loves me so much he would die for me really matters; and it really is true, I have a pretty wonderful life even without television.

I think I'm gonna make it.

Heidi,

You can always tune into the networks internet sites and watch it all commercial free and pay no cable or TV bills.

That works for me and I can watch things when I have time, not when its scheduled to be on and I avoid all the commercials at the same time.

I know 1John2:15 Says: "Do not love the world or the things in this world.
But is that the same world that God Loved so much that He sent His only Son to die for, in John 3:16? I've heard many opinions on this. But I'd like to hear yours.

years ago we were robbed and they took the TV. Tony was away at grad school and I didn't bother to replace it for almost 6 months. And only then because he came home and wanted to watch TV. I found I was quite happy reading. Even with a 4 year old, she didn't seem to miss anything either. ah well. Still no cable or dish though - too cheap - same DNA as you ! :D

You say "No Will Power to TV" but I think you are just the opposite and I am so impressed with your will power!

Think of all the hours we waste (speaking for myself and many others too I'm sure) staring at the tv.

(I was 16 in 1980 too!)

Oh, I remember the aluminum foil and rabbit ears from our early years of marriage. :-) What memories!
We have satellite TV but will being doing away with it once we are able to get high-speed internet here in our hills. :-)
Really, the house seems so much more peaceful without the TV, which we really don't watch as much as most, though I do have a couple of favorite shows.

AND nothing can compare to a good book! :-)

You are MUCH better off without tv! At night I feel bad because of all the hours that are spent vegging in front of a mindless box that controls our lives.
I think I'd like to do w/o ... At one point we even BURNED our tv to keep us from watching and we didn't want to pass our "curse" to someone else. Within 30 days we were renting a tv... yeah, we were not very brave afterall.
I'm proud for you!
Blessings~

You know I share your heart on this. I have to say I can't give up my tv even though I rarely ever watch it.

There are so many other things we can fill our minds with, like all those great books you are reading. There was a time when there was no tv. What did people do then?

Hi Heidi! You've won a ticket to the AWI conference - can you email me asap with your email address? I need to pass it on to the conference organizers so they can get you set up. Thanks!

The ticket you won is the A Woman Inspired online conference next month (http://www.awomaninspiredconference.org/current-conference/). You had commented on one of my posts last week, and randomly selected three commenters from the week to win a ticket. If you would like it, can you let me know? Thanks!

Hi again. I thought curling was something you did to your hair also. But when I heard it was an Olympic event, I thought that hair styling would be a pretty boring sport....although in my very humble opinion, the event wasn't much more exciting than the hair thing. Just my opinion....nobody go crazy on me!

Go to You Tube and watch a clip (clip-hair-haha-excuse the pun). To me it seems to be a combination of bowling and scrubbing the kitchen floor.

QUESTION- What was your favorite tv show when you were a kid or a teenager?

So how are you enjoying River's new book? I've liked some and not so much others.

Am excited to get my Kindle this week and Beth's new book is the first one I'll be getting!

I can laugh at this post because I can relate! We have never had cable (too rural) or a dish (too cheap and not a priority.) Our children claimed child abuse and we laughed and played games, talked and read. We have rabbit ears and get about 5 stations and it's enough!!
